Anne Luise Buerger, the former Teacher Coordinator of the Mentoring Program, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2010, succumbing to cancer.
There will be a memorial service for Anne at 1 PM on Sunday, July 25 at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 9 Carleton Avenue, Port Washington, NY and a reception at her home thereafter.
An architecture teacher at NYC’s High School of Art and Design, Anne was described recently by a former student as the best teacher he had at the HSAD. Perceptive, smart, a delightful colleague, Anne loved kids; in turn, they adored her.
Almost ethereal, Anne inspired students and mentors alike. In a quiet, self-effacing way, Anne affected scores of kids and adults. It was a delight to work with Anne and a privilege to know her.

I’ve presumed to add a few of the comments extolling Anne.
“Anne was inspiring, devoted and caring. She saw the potential in others and did everything she could to see it grow ” —Maruchi Santana, Chief Client Officer, Executive Creative Director, Parham Santana

“thats so sad . . . she was really great!” —David, former HSAD student

Six students from New York City’s High School of Art and Design are being given an opportunity that many designers only dream of – their designs will be featured on Clear Channel’s “Spectacolor HD” digital billboard in Times Square. The billboards were created as part of Create! Don’t Hate., a Design Ignites Change mentoring initiative. Professional designers from the mentoring program of the New York chapter of AIGA worked with students from the High School of Art and Design to create billboard designs addressing the theme of tolerance.
The winning billboard designs will be unveiled on Spectacolor HD during a launch event at the corner of Broadway and 47th Street on July 6th starting at 12:15pm The mentors, project coordinators, representatives from Worldstudio and Clear Channel, along with the general public will be on hand to celebrate with the students and their families.
We would like to congratulate one of two 2010 Interpublic Mentoring Scholarships: Arielle Jennings, a senior at High School of Art and Design whose mentor is Beth Tondreau which is awarded through the Department of Education Mentoring Program.
This participatory exhibition shines a light on the careers of 25 designers from a variety of backgrounds, whose own lives and experiences demonstrate the ideal combination of diversity and excellence. Visitors will also be encouraged to consider their own journeys and place in design.

Angie loves chocolate ice cream, and last Friday we couldn’t resist to stop by Pink Berry on our way to find crazy graffitis around Soho. A few months ago I took her to my favorite ceramic studio in Carroll Garden and she made this really cool character. Of course she is a fan of Tim Burton and went to see the show at MOMA 20 times (she is not kidding!). We went 3 times together during the free Friday afternoons and saw many other shows too. We always have a lot of fun together.Edit This
Digital Day Camp (DDC10) will invite 16 NYC public high school students to participate in the pilot of our Mobile App School. As part of this 3-week intensive, students will work alongside experienced artists, designers, and technologists to design their own software application for the mobile platform. Students will research cell phones as tools for creative interaction, learn how to create graphics for mobile devices, and organize all their great ideas into one collaborative mobile app proposal. At a closing reception for the Mobile App School, students and creative collaborators will pitch their proposed app to an audience of application developers.
The theme for DDC10 responds to our summer exhibition, Re:Group: Beyond Models of Consensus. Throughout the process of researching and designing their app, students will meet and learn about the work of Re:Group artists whose practice poses social, creative, and bottom-up solutions and interventions in response to community challenges. These explorations will inform their work as they imagine new potienals for the mobile platform.
DDC will accept 16 students from NYC public high schools in 2010. Participating students are paid a $20/day stipend, paid out at the program’s conclusion.
